Mia follows me down the stairs and as I flick on the lights to the studio, she gasps. “Whoa. This is so awesome.”

I can’t help but smile. Seeing it through fresh eyes makes me grateful for what I’ve achieved. I didn’t waste a second, or a dime, in converting the basement into a studio, but I’ve never used it—until this forced sabbatical.

Mia skips past me and spins around, taking in the spacious room with a glass booth at one end. Framed album covers of different artists adorn the walls. A couple of sofas and a coffee table fill the space, creating a comfortable place to relax. A variety of guitars—acoustic and electric—hang from hooks on the wall. I play all of them, but my favorite is the Gibson J-45. The first guitar I used to write my first song.

“Is this all yours?” Mia’s eyes widen with wonder.

“Yes.”

“I can’t believe you’ve got your own studio in your house. I mean, of course you do. You’re Jenna Ashton.” She giggles. “But I never thought it would be so cool. They look so dark and seedy in movies.”

“I like it,” I say, flipping a switch. Two spotlights shine down on the microphones in the booth, inviting an entire world of creativity.

“Did you build this?”

“Yes. Well, I paid contractors to build it years ago. But nobody has used it. Have a go.” I gesture to the microphone.

Mia glances to the glass-encased booth, suddenly shy. She gnaws on her bottom lip. “No. I can’t.” Her dark hair swishes behind her as she shakes her head.

“Why not?”

“Because…” Her gaze drifts around the room. “Because I can’t.”

I know she wants to, and I can see the insecurity and indecision warring on her features.

“Can’t or won’t?” I ask softly. There’s a vast difference between those two words. And while my question might sound harsh, it was the same one someone asked me many years ago when I first started out.

Fear is a cruel beast and thwarts potential before it even has the chance to shine. It takes courage and vulnerability to believe in yourself, and I want to encourage Mia to do just that.

I step over to her and place a hand on her shoulder. “I believe you can do it, Mia. What have you got to lose? How about I go first, and then you can have a turn?”

“Okay.” She sits on the edge of the white leather sofa, tucking her hands under her thighs.

I walk into the booth, flick some buttons, line up a track, and position the headphones over my ears.

From behind the glass, I give her a grin and a thumbs up as the music plays. It’s a song in the charts at the moment—not mine, but one she’ll know and hopefully will give her the confidence to be brave enough to try.

My foot taps in time with the beat, and I’m soon lost in the melody. It’s a fun song to sing, and I can’t help moving around, swaying my hips as I belt into the microphone.
